More Wolves

More Wolves

This a continued blog about the wolves I saw.

My Notes:

755M
Black turning grey, 6 years old, sex: Male, Pack: Lone wolf

We saw two wolves. One female and one male. The male was numbered. his number was 755M. The M stands for male. He is a black wolf. When I saw him he was mostly grey. The reason he was grey was because he was old. Wolves only live until around 10 or so. He was 6 so he was fairly old. His girlfriend or mate was only 2 years old. There's a little age gap. His mate before this one died. I don't know her number. When I found him he was eating a carcass. I didn't know what he was eating but I found out later. The pair of wolves were eating a baby elk.

The Yellow Tetons

The Yellow Tetons

This week we were in Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons National Park. I have made a few new friends and pets. In Yellowstone I met ranger Rick. I met him when.... I don't want to spoil my grand ending! He was a very nice guy who answered many of my questions! My other friend I met at my camp site! We were camping in Yellowstone in Norris campground. First person we met was the camp host. I forgot her name! :D (smiley face) She was very nice and funny! We met her because a person accidentally hit the bear box in our camp ground sending it toppling over! We were not in the trailer at the time! When we got home she came to our campsite and told us what happened. The last people we met were people from Michigan. They really liked our Alaska plates! They were a slightly aged couple with a dog that walked itself! The man was a firefighter like my dad so they talked about firefighting and living in Alaska. My mom was talking to a woman about living in Alaska and dogs! I was talking and petting the dog. You know when I said that they were the last people we met. I lied. We went to the ranger Museum and met the ranger there. It turned out that his wife was the teacher whose place my mom took when she started teaching at North Pole Middle! Now on the the important stuff. My pets! First I have my pets from the Tetons. I have my pet moose and my pet pika. I don't have any names for them. My pets at Yellowstone were a coyote, buffalo, elk, and............. ITS A SECRET!!!!!!! Anyway we saw buffalo and elk, but I was most existed when I saw a coyote!! I was even more existed when I saw a.....

Geysers, Mudpots, and Furaroles

Geysers
A geyser is a hot spring that erupts. For a geyser to work you need, heat, water, and pressure. Rain water seeps into the ground and collects into a pool then it gets heated up by the magma. As the water gets heated pressure builds. The pressure gets released and hot water and steam shoots out through a vent.

Fumaroles
Fumaroles are hot springs. They are so hot and have very little water that some of the water evaporates before it reaches the top. So you get steam and boiling water.

Mudpots
There is boiling water underground like the geysers. The rocks in the area are soft and can be broken down easily. Hydrogen sylph is present and reacts with the water and the rock creating a mixture of silica and clay. Hot muddy water bubbles out.

My new pet

My New Pet

I have many pets on this trip. When we were hiking 6,000 feet up, I got another.

The squirrel on my shoe

My new pet

I have no name for him, but I am thinking. We first met him when I walked right past a marmot. (I was looking at the ground :/) My dad told me that I walked right pasted him and I was pretty upset so I named him and we moved on. Only three steps away, a red squirrel ran close to me, but kept his distance.  I was awing over him when suddenly, he jumped on my neon orange shoe and started eating it. I was afraid he was going to crawl up my leg!!! I didn't want to move on, but I did. Okay my mom like dragged me, but still. The trail we hiked on was on the side of the cliff! we saw waterfalls cool rocks and a weasel!!!! we couldn't get a vary good picture of him because we only saw him for 5 seconds. We also saw many mountain goats There was one up close with her baby!

The Many Hikes We Did

The Many Hikes We Did

This week was full of fun and excitement! We were in Mount Rainer National Park. We hiked two trails. The first trail we went on was the Skyline to Panorama Point. It was about 4 miles round trip. We saw many Marmots! I got so close I could touch it!

My pet Marmot
The second trail we went to was the Pinnacle Point. It was 3 miles round trip. When we got to the t we stopped to have lunch. I HATE crust so I pulled off the crust of the sandwich. There was some rustling in the bushes behind me. When I looked behind me we were surrounded by Grey Jays! We also got accompanied by a squirrel! It was super fun when my Dad put a piece of bread on my hand and all the birds would try to get the bread from my hand.

The Ozette Trail

The Ozette Trail
Last week my family and I walked 11.0 miles on the Ozette trail. We started on a steep boardwalk that was 3.2 miles long. In my opinion it was the second longest trail. Even though the boardwalk was the longest trail, the beach took the most time to get across. After the long, long boardwalk we found a little campsite/picnic table and ate lunch there, enjoying the scenic view. The beach was very hot one minute and windy the next. The beach was originally 3.0 miles long, but we walked an extra mile. 200 years ago there was an Indian village that got swept away by a mud slide. When some people were walking on the beach they noticed something sticking out of the mud. They called scientists and they dug out the entire mud slide and found artifacts from the Indians. We went to go look at the spot the village was at and that was another mile. So instead of walking 3.0 miles we walked 4.0 miles. The last part of our walk was a nice little boardwalk that was nicer than the other trails. At the end of our journey we had walked 11.0 miles. To celebrate we had ice cream!

                                                          On Our Trip There Were:

Cool tide pools

Huge trees

And cool looking rocks
The Best Part Of The Trip Was
It took me 7.0 miles to pull out my tooth!!!!
